Carpe Diem: Plan today or regret tomorrow
About two months ago, a close relative of mine had a very sudden, very out of the blue epiphany: she no longer wanted to live in her house and subsequently had no thought or plan on where she wanted to go. My relative had been living alone for almost ten years after her husband’s passing and the combination of loneliness and constant upkeep on a large had grown tiresome. Once the realization had hit her that she no longer wanted to live in her house, she became filled with anxiety and stress not knowing her options or what steps to take next.
The process of selling a home and finding a new place to live, as you may know from personal experience, can take years. For aging individuals, the process can be even more time consuming and complex. Assisted living facilities often have lengthy waiting lists and can be unaffordable for some.
Fortunately for my family member, she has been very lucky receiving multiple bids on her property since she put her home on the market and has a retirement community apartment waiting for her once she sells but I believe without proper planning, this scenario is the exception and not the rule.
Don’t delay planning your future. Help yourself, your family and your loved ones by educating yourself on available living options in the next ten, twenty or fifty years. You won’t regret it.
